Sacred Sites in Tuscany Oct. 2019

La Verna, Monastery of St. Francis

October 18 – 26, 2019

Four spaces available

$2400 single room, $2200 double

For 8 days I will show you my favorite contemplative places inside and outside of Florence, hallowed grounds, centuries old and ever powerful. We will see monasteries, sanctuaries, a church said to be a place where heaven and earth meet, and a 350 year old “Queen Cypress”.

San Miniato al Monte, high above the city, is said to be one of the rare locations where heaven and earth meet. And where we can hear gregorian evensong every night, sung in the same way for 1000 years.

Florence Baptistery

The Florence Baptistery is the most potent building I have ever been in and have spent many hours enveloped in the energy emanating from the symbolism that covers every surface. Legend has it that the Baptistery was built on top of an ancient Roman temple to Mars. For the people of Florence this building is a direct connection to the republican (small r) ideals of ancient Rome.

Il Santuario Madonna al Sasse

In 1474, three young girls tending sheep in a field saw a vision of the Virgin Mary standing upon a rock asking them to build a church in this place for her. Charming and remote, the deep peacefulness there soothes the soul.

Lunch at Manuela’s Castelvecchio in the idyllic hills of Pian di Giuliari

Other sites could include Padua, where Giotto’s most beautiful fresco cycle is on display in the small church where it was painted and Monte Scenario, perched high in the Tuscan hills with a pilgrimage path through an ancient cedar forest leading to the 12th century monastery.
